Recommended Sequence for Each New Chapter

  1. Anki Vocabulary: Learn New Vocabulary (before watching the lecture)

    1. Open your paper copy of the vocabulary for the chapter.
    2. Anki ↠ [ RBH_Vocabulary ]
    3. Click [ Custom Study ] at the bottom of the Anki window.
    4. Select [ Study by card state or tag ] and [ New cards only ] before clicking [ Choose Tags ] at the bottom.
    5. Select [ Require one or more of these tags: ] and select the new chapter number before clicking [ OK ] at the bottom.
    6. Click [ Study Now ].
    7. Work your way through all the cards until Anki says that you are done:
      • Concentrate on learning to pronounce the words.
      • Tip: When you confuse two words with each other, study their spelling difference on your paper copy.
      • Tip: Mark up your paper copy with notes and mnemonics.
      • Tip: Some words have additional glosses or notes in small print below the main glosses. You do not need to memorize these.
      • How Anki works: When Anki says you are done with a card (and not before), Anki adds the new card to your review schedule.
  2. Video Lecture

    • Watch the lecture on YouTube or download.
    • Tip: Perhaps watch the lecture at 1.25x or 1.5x speed?
    • Tip: Perhaps take notes on the transcripts or lecture slides (color or bw).
  3. Anki Grammar: Understand and Memorize the New Grammar

    • Do a [ Custom Study ] of the [ RBH_Grammar ] for the chapter like step 1, above, but with the grammar flashcards instead of the vocabulary.
    • If you understand the questions and answers, you understood the lecture sufficiently.
    • If you can answer the questions from memory, you remember the lecture sufficiently.
      • Tip: Treat the grammar flashcards like vocabulary flashcards.
  4. Paradigm: Understand & Memorize the New Paradigm (if there is one)

    1. Study the chapter's paradigm (if there is one) in the paradigms pdf.
      • Concentrate on understanding the paradigm and noticing patterns in it.
      • Tip: When you don't understand something in the paradigm, look at the lecture slides and the lecture transcript instead of re-watching the lecture.
    2. Write the new paradigm by hand in your paper copy of the worksheets pdf.
      • Check & correct your work after each item.
      • Repeat until you write the paradigm completely correctly once.
    3. Type a practice quiz online of the new paradigm.
      • Repeat until you score 100% once.
  5. Anki Vocabulary: Check for missed vocabulary cards

    • Anki ↠ [ RBH_Vocabulary ] ↠ [ Custom Study ] ↠ [ Study by card state or tag ] ↠ [ New cards only ] ↠ select all of the tags up through the current chapter.
    • Anki should say "No cards matched the criteria you provided." If it does have some cards, then you missed them in step 1, so learn those cards.
    • Tip: This step checks for any cards that were missed by stopping step 1 prematurely.
  6. Anki Vocabulary: Solidify Memory of New Vocabulary

    • Anki ↠ [ RBH_Vocabulary ] ↠ [ Custom Study ] ↠ [ Study by card state or tag ] ↠ [ All review cards in random order ] ↠ select only the current chapter.
    • Work your way through all the cards until Anki says that you are done.
  7. Workbook: Practice

    • Anki ↠ [ RBH_Workbook ] ↠ [ Custom Study ] ↠ [ Study by card state or tag ] ↠ [ All review cards in random order (don't reschedule) ] ↠ select only the current chapter.
    • Tip: You don't have to do every exercise. Quit when they become straightforward (or you run out of time).
    • Tip: When you don't understand something, check the lecture slides PDF to figure out why the answer is correct and the principles that would enable you to figure it out. If you can't figure it out after 2 minutes, ask your teacher and move on.
